Crisis Detection: The AI Guard That Never Sleeps
Every year, thousands of people take their own lives. Many of these tragedies could have been prevented if someone had detected the warning signs in time. The CalmCall crisis detection system is designed to be that "someone" — a vigilant guard who never gets tired, never gets distracted, and never takes time off.
How AI Detects Risk
The crisis detection system works on multiple levels simultaneously:
- Lexical Analysis — detects words and expressions associated with suicidal ideation, self-harm, or abuse: "I don't want to live anymore," "it would be better without me," "I hurt myself," "I can't take it anymore"
- Vocal Analysis — voice changes indicating acute suffering: "empty" voice, extreme monotony, crying, choppy breathing
- Contextual Analysis — sudden changes in conversation topic, uncharacteristic "goodbyes," discussions about redistributing belongings
- Temporal Analysis — progressive deterioration of emotional state across multiple conversations
Safety Protocols
When the system detects significant risk, it activates a structured, tiered protocol:
Level 1 — Gentle Check-In: The AI asks clarifying questions: "I want to make sure I understand correctly what you're feeling. Can you tell me more?" Many false positives are eliminated at this level.
Level 2 — Stabilization: If risk is confirmed, AI switches to stabilization mode. It uses de-escalation techniques: grounding, controlled breathing, emotional validation. It doesn't try to minimize or "solve" — just to keep the person safe.
Level 3 — Professional Connection: The AI offers options: direct transfer to personal therapist, call to crisis hotline, or to emergency services. The emergency number is presented with a single tap.
Level 4 — Safety Network: With the user's prior consent, the system can notify a designated trusted person (family member, friend, therapist) via SMS or call.
Managing False Positives
A crisis detection system must balance two risks: missing a real danger (false negative) and unnecessarily triggering an alarm (false positive). CalmCall is calibrated to minimize false negatives — it's better to check one more time than to miss a real signal.
At the same time, the tiered verification process significantly reduces false positives. A simple mention of "death" in a metaphorical context won't trigger level 3, but an accumulation of indicators will be investigated.
Ethical Considerations
Crisis detection raises important ethical questions that we take seriously:
- The user is always informed that the detection system is active
- Notifying the trusted person is done only with prior consent
- The AI doesn't make medical decisions — it connects with professionals who do
- All crisis data is strictly confidential and GDPR protected
24/7 Monitoring
Crises don't follow a schedule. That's why the detection system operates non-stop, 365 days a year. Whether you're talking to the voice companion at 3 AM or writing in the therapeutic journal on Sunday evening, the system is watching.
We hope it never needs to activate. But if it does, it will be there. Because every life matters — including yours.
If you're going through a crisis now, call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 988 (US) or your local emergency services. You are not alone.
